Why I Curate Salts From Around the World

Dearest Reader,

Salt is never just salt. Each grain carries the story of its water, its wind, and its people.

Celtic Sea Salt® was founded in 1976 by Dr. Jacques Delangre, a Belgian scientist and my father-in-law, who helped open people’s eyes to the beauty of unrefined, traditionally harvested salt. To this day, he is celebrated as a pioneer in delivering the good news of sea salt’s unique benefits. His vision was simple but radical: keep salt whole, as nature intended.

Rediscovering Salt’s True Nature

When Jacques began, salt was widely misunderstood. Refined table salt had become the norm, stripped of its minerals and treated as a cheap commodity. But he saw what many had forgotten: that salt, when harvested with patience and care, carries within it more than sodium chloride. It carries trace minerals essential to health, the imprint of the ecosystem that formed it, and a flavor complexity that connects us back to the sea.

We cannot forget that Jacques was a scientist by training. He was not only in awe of salt’s natural form, he was also scientifically diligent, studying and testing every batch of Celtic Sea Salt® to ensure the highest quality and the optimal mineral profile. He wanted empirical evidence that Celtic Sea Salt® was the best in the world.

With both his wonder and rigor, he gave people a new way to see salt: not something to avoid, but something to treasure.

I have spent my adult life carrying that mission forward: walking salt ponds, meeting artisans, curating salts, and scientifically testing every batch to honor both place and craft. These journeys have taken me across continents and into communities where salt is not just a product, but a livelihood and a heritage. I have stood with harvesters ankle-deep in clay ponds, felt the sting of ocean wind on my face, and held crystals still moist with brine. Each encounter has deepened my belief that salt is a gift of nature and culture combined.

Celtic as Method, Not Place

Over time, I came to understand that what we call the “Celtic method”—guiding the sea into ponds, letting sun and wind crystallize its minerals, and harvesting by hand—is not limited to one region or one culture.

This way of working with the sea has echoed across civilizations, from the Celts of Europe to the Mayans and Aztecs of the Americas, to coastal communities in India and beyond. Wherever people honored the ocean as teacher, this same reverence appeared, with methods rooted in patience, purity, and respect for the earth.

We’ve also found coastal and in some cases, inland, communities with unique, ancient, sustainable ecosystems that produce incredible, high mineral salts. For example, our Celtic Pink Cave salt and our Makai Sea Salt are incredible sources with unique, high mineral profiles. As curators of these salts, we’re thrilled to bring these to market under our name.

That lineage inspires me to this day.

Geographic Diversity: Ensuring Supply of Our Vital Mineral Blends

My mission has always been to ensure that there is enough full-spectrum, high-quality salt available for everyone. I never want this incredible product to go away because we didn’t manage the risk of sourcing from a single small region. This is why I curate salts from around the world. Each beautiful region lends itself to a singular terroir shaped by climate, geology, and craft. However, one thing is constant: a method of harvesting that lends itself to high mineral, full-spectrum salts.

A moist, briny grey salt from the coastal ponds of Brittany, France tells a story just like the mineral-heavy Mayan salt, formed along the lush mangrove-forested coastlines of Meso-America. To taste them side by side is to taste the place itself, translated through color, texture, flavor, and something so sacred it is beyond words.

More Than Sourcing

To me, curating salts is more than sourcing. It is stewardship. It is a way of elevating salt as a category, of showing that salt can be profound when left unrefined, and of carrying nature’s gifts intact to your table.

It is also a way of honoring the people who tend these traditions, often against the tide of modern convenience. By curating, I connect their craft with your kitchen, weaving together a story of care and continuity.

My Promises to You

When I curate salts, I hold to a few simple promises.

  • I will always seek salts as nature intended: sourcing with care, preserving naturally occurring minerals, and never chemically treating.

  • I will curate from sources that harvest with integrity, celebrating each salt by name, with names drawn directly from its place of origin and the local craft that shapes it.

  • I will work with artisans who treat land and water as partners, never as resources to be exploited.

  • And I will offer transparency: every lot tested, every source honored.

These are not marketing claims. They are commitments I have lived by for decades, because salt deserves reverence—and so do you.

An Invitation

Celtic Sea Salt® has always been about more than seasoning. It is about trust, tradition, and the reminder that wholeness is worth preserving.

Salt is a daily act. We sprinkle it without thinking, we reach for it instinctively. My hope is that when you reach for Celtic Sea Salt®, you pause for just a moment. You notice its texture, its moisture, its subtle differences. You remember that it carries a lineage of place, people, and patience.

My invitation is simple: taste widely. Explore the salts of many terroirs. Let them remind you that food, like life, is richer when we honor its fullness. And may each grain call you back to the simple truth that nature gives us everything we need.

With gratitude,
Selina
