Quality & Safety Over 50 Years ofQuality Standards

Since 1976, Celtic Sea Salt® has been committed to preserving traditionally harvested mineral sea salts while holding ourselves to rigorous standards for testing, transparency, and verification.

We are passionate about every aspect of our salt—from where it comes from to how we validate what is inside every bag.

Every lot is independently analyzed to verify mineral content, purity, and safety.

Tested & Proven

Every Lot Independently Tested

Each production lot is analyzed by accredited third-party laboratories.

 Testing includes:
    • Mineral composition
    • Sodium and sodium chloride levels
    • Heavy metals
    • Microbial safety
    • Additional quality indicators

Our testing process allows us to understand both the natural variation of our salts and the consistency of our standards.

Sodium Content

Naturally Lower Sodium Chloride Levels

Pure sodium chloride contains 39.3% sodium. Because Celtic Sea Salt® salts retain naturally occurring minerals and moisture, they contain less sodium chloride than refined table salt.

Salt TypeSodium Content (typical range)Implied Sodium Chloride Content
Celtic Fine Ground32.5% – 35.2%82.6% – 89.4%
Light Grey Celtic®29.2% – 34.2%74.4% – 86.9%

Typical range represents mean ± one standard deviation across 2026 tests at two independent laboratories.

Box and whisker chart of sodium percentage by product. Celtic Fine Ground™: mean 33.8 percent, whiskers 31.4 to 35.9. Light Grey Celtic®: mean 31.7 percent, whiskers 28.3 to 36.3. Pure sodium chloride reference line at 39.3 percent.

Table values represent all 2026 lot tests from both independent laboratories (Celtic Fine Ground™ n=18; Light Grey Celtic® n=31). Typical ranges represent mean ± one standard deviation. The chart displays the distribution of sodium results across all tested lots; the box represents the middle 50% of results, whiskers represent the full range, and the dashed gold line represents the mean. Pure sodium chloride reference is 39.3% sodium.

Chloride Cross-Check

An Additional Layer of Validation

Because salt contains sodium, chloride, and other naturally occurring minerals, chloride measurements provide another way to validate sodium chloride calculations.

By comparing results from separate analytical methods, we can confirm that reported values accurately represent the composition of our salts.

Key Minerals

Light Grey Celtic® and Celtic Fine Ground™ each have their own distinct mineral profile.

The minerals below represent those we routinely measure through independent laboratory testing.

MineralCeltic Fine Ground (typical range, PPM)Light Grey Celtic® (typical range, PPM)
Magnesium6,999 – 13,7446,987 – 14,439
Potassium2,857 – 5,2422,738 – 5,449
Calcium3,037 – 4,2443,274 – 4,771
Iron9.6 – 13.610.1 – 16.2
Manganese2.1 – 3.01.0 – 6.8

Typical ranges represent mean ± one standard deviation across all 2026 laboratory results. Mineral values are calculated from repeated independent laboratory analyses: magnesium, potassium, and calcium include both laboratory datasets (n=18–32 per product), while iron and manganese are based on Light Labs assays (n=6–14 per product). Non-detect results are included as zero when calculating ranges. Moisture content and additional trace elements are reported on individual lot Certificates of Analysis (COAs).

Purity Testing

Screening for Heavy Metals

Every production lot is screened for four heavy metals — lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury — through independent accredited laboratories. Because these elements can naturally occur at trace levels in mineral-rich environments, we evaluate both detection levels and consistency across repeated testing.

Below are the 2026 results from all tested production lots.

ElementCeltic Fine Ground — Median Value (Std Dev in parenthesis)Light Grey Celtic® — Median Value (Std Dev in parenthesis)
LeadNot Detected (Std Dev 42.5 PPB)58.5 PPB (Std Dev 47.0 PPB)
ArsenicNot Detected (Std Dev 3.6 PPB)Not Detected (Std Dev 10.4 PPB)
CadmiumNot Detected (Std Dev 2.2 PPB)Not Detected (Std Dev 1.6 PPB)
MercuryNever detectedNever detected

Results represent all 2026 heavy metal tests from two independent laboratories (Celtic Fine Ground™ n=24; Light Grey Celtic® n=39 per element). Median values and standard deviations are calculated across all results, with non-detect results included as zero. A “Not Detected” result means the element was below the laboratory’s detection limit; actual values may fall between zero and that limit. Detection limits vary by laboratory (Eurofins: 25–100 ppb; Light Labs: approximately 3–48 ppb).

Understanding Laboratory Testing

Salt is a complex mineral matrix. Accurate testing requires the right methods for each element being measured.

The Method Has to Fit the Element

Measuring a major component like sodium and measuring a trace contaminant like lead at parts-per-billion levels require different preparation, calibration, and analytical methods.

We work with our laboratories to ensure each measurement method is appropriate for the concentration range being evaluated.

Every Result Has a Range

Laboratory testing includes measurement uncertainty. Rather than relying on a single result, we evaluate repeated measurements across multiple samples and time periods.

This helps ensure published values represent the true characteristics of our salts.

Trust Comes From Redundancy

Repeat testing helps confirm that results are representative.

Some elements may vary around laboratory detection limits. By using multiple tests and analytical approaches, we gain a clearer understanding of each salt’s natural composition.

2026 Certificates of Analysis

Transparency by Lot

We believe customers, retailers, and partners should have access to the information behind our products.

Below are third-party laboratory reports for our 2026 production lots. Each report provides detailed analytical results, including mineral composition and purity testing.

The Certificates of Analysis (COAs) represent third-party laboratory testing for 2026 production lots. Each Eurofins report includes a complete panel of tested parameters for that sample, while Light Labs certificates are provided by individual assay. These reports demonstrate our testing standards, elemental composition, and quality verification process.

Laboratory reports are provided to showcase elemental ranges and testing standards. They do not indicate a connection between a specific consumer purchase and an individual production lot or production date.
